Before changing the regulator check the state of charge of the battery .
Normally, a damaged regulator (if it stops functioning for a excessive work load, the regulator melts) damages the battery. It is a good habit to also change the battery when the regulator is substituted, as a damaged battery can ruin a perfectly new regulator.

This two electronic components are closely linked, in fact apart from the case of a faulty generator, a damaged regulator can start providing low level of current (less frequent) or a too high level of current (most likely) to the battery. This scenario could lead to a perfectly new battery to be damaged.

A damaged battery (i.e. very low charge) can lead the regulator into overworking and therefore deteriorate.
Immediately after the installation of the regulator, it is important to verify the level of current reaching the battery posts. The optimal voltage is 13.8V and it must not rise over 14.5V / 14.7V and must remain stable with the changing of the RPM. Different levels of currents indicate problem to the electric system and need to be checked by a specialized garage workshop.
